Weapons and Cruising

Considering world cruising and if it is not more dangerous to have it than not, I would prefer to have a weapon on board.

I am not a gun nut or anything but there are a few I have met that consider it std equipment. Read a few piracy stories that have me thinking I would rather have the ability to defend myself or deter an attack than not (logic being, a would be pirate would rather not chance an attack on someone who can shoot back).

How do you do this legally? What red tape is involved? Are there some destinations where it is more trouble than it is worth?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

The problem with weapons on board is that many countries don't want your weapons to end up on their soil. It only compounds their problems. Some countries are more flexable than others. Friends of mine checked their weapons in when entering Panama and then retrieved them when leaving. If you hide a weapon on board and it is found, you are in trouble.

Cruisers I know do carry legal weapons. Flare guns and spear guns.

Up to you to make the choice. Be careful.

I'm thinking that the two most covered subjects on this forum are marine toilets and weapons. I'd try a search on the subject and see if you aren't overwhelmed.

As for me..... a porta potty. I have no idea why people spend so much time and energy on anything else. Although I do admit to considering a composting toilet.

And on weapons.... make friends.... stay in good spots.... don't live in fear. And another admission. I carry 2 flare guns. One to load while the other one is ready to fire.

That's all I'm gonna say about that.

FWIW I am presently upgrading from an Axe (handheld) to a Sword (errr...also handheld ). Something from the late 19th Century looks favourite. My thinking is: A Sword Onboard = Wayyyy Cool

But I would caution that you should check my Bio. "Tied to the Dock" also translates as "Too much time spent on the internet / too much time on me hands"

Another great "legal" weapon to have on board is wasp spray. You can shoot it very long distances and it will leave a intruder totally incapacitated with a memory of there visit on your boat that will last a very long time.

It's always entertaining to see how fast Google can get their ads geared up to match the topic of a gun thread.

I must not be on cruisers forum often enough to have seen all the past threads on weapons...maybe that is a good thing?

maybe we just need a rule that no one can start a gun thread the first day they join the forum.

I'm planning to make a sewage gun. Blackwater shot at high velocity into the would-be attacker's face. At least I'll get a good laugh before they shoot me.

I was just wondering how someone would effectively combined the guns and toilets thread.
