Sailing while waiting for USCG Documentation Exchange

I put in an exchange of documentation to the Coast Guard in February. Just talked to an officer there today and they are still processing recreation endorsements from January, so mine will not be processed for at least another couple weeks. This is not the first time I've put in a CG1258 form, but I've not seen this delay before. Typically it takes 6-8 weeks.

I'm wrapping up a refit in North Carolina and asked the officer for thoughts on setting sail without the updated doc. She said it would be up to whoever potentially boards me to decide what to do.

Should I be more concerned than I am about sailing without the updated documentation? I still have copies of the old onboard and all other relevant docs. Only change is vessel renaming. Same official # and all that.

Were in the same boat, well,, situation, just sent off paperwork, heading to Bahamas in 4 weeks. We do have the temporary state issued registration and copies of all documentation paperwork so should be ok. Are you leaving for a long period of time, will someone be able to send you the paperwork

Re: Sailing while waiting for USCG Documentation Exchange

I used the woman in this link she worked for the coast guard for many years I paid the 75 dollar processing plus if I remember it was an extra 50 dollars for the rush. I had all my stuff in 3 days she also issued a temp just in case I needed proof of ownership and documentation.

No, you will be fine.

Her response was the typical bureaucrat response, accept no responsibility; no more, no less.

Re: Sailing while waiting for USCG Documentation Exchange

Gloria Rector looks to provide a valuable service for those who don't have 2-3 months to wait for paperwork.

My paperwork was filed by the CG back in February, so it's a bit late to use her. I did send in a request for priority handling yesterday so hopefully that will get through. Leaving NC in 3 weeks outside to FL before heading to the bahamas/points south in the fall.

A friends house in FL could receive the documents if I can't get them before I leave NC. Eitehr way, it's probably a good time to finally etch out the official # on one of the interior bulkheads..

Re: Sailing while waiting for USCG Documentation Exchange

My understanding is that if your paperwork is being processed, and you can show that to be the case, you should have no problems. Obviously keep all the old paperwork on board along with copies of what you sent in. If someone wants to check beyond what you have to show, he or she can call Documentation HQ in West Virginia and confirm what you've told them.

Yup. Show that your paperwork is in process. They know it's a mess. Took 6 months to process ours.

You don't need to worry. Keep copies of everything, and you'll be fine.

Everybody knows about the USCG backlog.

Thanks all. Very good to know. Just wanted to ensure someone having a bad day didn't have the authority to seize my home! She's all I got

Re: Sailing while waiting for USCG Documentation Exchange

Just use state registration when checking in. We're in same boat. I didn't even bother saying it's in process of being documented as they wouldn't care either way...

Re: Sailing while waiting for USCG Documentation Exchange

Probably should have mentioned it, but the boat is not registered to any state.

Re: Sailing while waiting for USCG Documentation Exchange

I spoke to a very nice woman at the Documentation HQs and my priority handling request was granted. The request was emailed yesterday and they have the certificate going out in the mail today.

Re: Sailing while waiting for USCG Documentation Exchange

Agree with the last two responses. Was stopped by the CG shortly after buying the boat and they asked for the documentation. I just showed them the emails I had with the documentation service and they didn't ask any more questions. Maybe not the official line, but if you get someone practical it appears fine.
