Offshore Insurance

Hi y'all, we just bought a schooner in France. We are going to register her in the US, documented vessel through the USCG.

I had planned on insuring it with State Farm because I've insured wooden boats with them in the past but they only insure in US waters.

What insurance company insures offshore, other countries, and wooden (cold molded) boats?

Re: Offshore Insurance

You have a difficult problem. Offshore sailboats are an exotic space in the insurance world, add on wooden hull and very few feel qualified to accurately calculate risks.

Contact Risk Stratigies.

They have a number of programs for unusual risk profiles, including wood boats.

Re: Offshore Insurance

Pantaenius is an obvious choice.

Pantaenius is different in different regions, but I've had excellent experiences with the UK office, very reasonable cost and very good service.

Only complaint I have is that they would not insure me in the high Arctic -- more than 200 miles above the Arctic Circle. But nor could I find anyone else to do it, so maybe not specific to Pants.

Re: Offshore Insurance

we're 75 miles offshore. After that I'm on my own...

I only carry liability and environmental anyway. If you sink in 1500 ft of water there isn't going to be anyone around to ask many questions or do an environmental cleanup.

If go down offshore you better just be happy if you live.

I've tried Pantaenius. They don't want to deal with people from the US, sadly. They think our legal system is too aggressive.
