Mandatory collision insurance?

Last summer (2018) while visiting the Connecticut & Rhode Island, not one but two marinas demanded that we have Loss/Collision insurance for our modest monohull.
The boat is long paid for, and we have a strong Liability policy in place.
Why would they care if we insure the boat for loss? I guess I can see some sort of 'Salvage' coverage should we somehow sink in their marina, or at the harbor entrance? We paid cash for the yacht largely so we wouldn't have to deal with this stuff, and now seem to be strong-armed into buying coverage we don't need.

Helps keep out the riff-raff, so they get a higher proportion of big spenders?

Depends on how you define "Loss/Collision insurance"


If your "liability insurance" covers damage to another vessel and salvage/spill recovery etc, that should cover it without actually needing hull/machinery coverage.
