Is it ok to bring a machete aboard?

Hi all,

I have been traveling in South America and found a cool looking antique machete in Peru that I carried on my backpack for about two months in Peru and Ecuador without problem.
I got it as a gift. I figured I would just take it home with me to ensure it made it. I flew into Trinidad and had no problems however I hear that sailing up to a country is another thing all together. I am hoping to avoid any problems as I still have some time before we set sail.
I am sailing to Grenada then hoping a plane back to the USA for the holidays.
Does anyone know if this will be a problem?
Thanks!

I've always had a machete on the boat. It's never been a problem.....besides it's an agricultural implement, not a weapon.

Should be no problem in any country where a machete is a normal and common household tool. Most fishing boats in 3rd world countries have several machetes or similar implements on board. They are universal.

Definitely not a problem in the eastern Caribbean. I had two on my boat.

How else would you open coconuts?

Sailing?
No one cares what kind of knives you carry. No one asks you to declare them on entry.

But when you fly home....make Real Damned Sure it is in the checked baggage, not carry-on. Expect to find a love letter tucked into your baggage when you land, advising you that some one saw it on the xray machine and riffles through your bag just in case there was a midget hiding in there, waiting to jump out and use it.

Most places . . . no problem . . . . but in parts of Australia and UK it could be. Take a look at this, for instance:Victoria Police - New Weapons Laws

Following the links, a person is prohibited from carrying any device that might be considered a weapon INCLUDING body armor, sports equipment, tools, any household item that might be used as a weapon. Keep this in mind ladies, no purses or pointy heels, knitting needles, hat pins, keys. AND Using any of these or any other ‘re-purposed’ item four self defense is a crime.

It is also permissible for authorities to stop and search anyone at any time any place without warrant or cause.

WOW, These people have willingly yielded their freedom. This is what we fought against 200 years ago.

I thought our British coworkers were pulling our collective legs when they said they could only own steak knives & kitchen knives by registration with the police.

Re: Is it ok to bring a machete aboard?

Yes that is right. I go out every day either sailing, driving or motorcycling in this wonderful land and all the time I am thinking of my freedom that I have given away. What a load of paranoid, pathetic thoughts I would have in my head if it bothered me, or I was even affected by it, one jot, and what a waste of the day and my life to worry about it.

Oh no! Is that a documentary? I am never going out again without my Uri Geller machete softening technique book.

I've had trouble keeping a mild steel parang or machete from rusting.

So I carry a stainless steel cocotap:

Cocotap

COCOTAP - Goodness.. Get into it

Re: Is it ok to bring a machete aboard?

Machetes, or pangas, are excellent for lopping the heads off big fish. And they are widely used for that purpose.

Cocotap looks cool, but I don't think I'd try to use it to chop up a 40 lb. wahoo or cut a fouled line with it.

Use Corrosion X on your steel.
