Inspected documents in Greece

Hello everyone!

I'm preparing for my first sail in Greece later this month, as a new boat owner. By the launch date, I will have all paperwork sorted out (boat registration, insurance, ICC, RYA SRC), except for one. Most probably, I won't have the Ship Station radio license yet. It seems the Polish authority takes 3-6 weeks, and they may make me wait the extra 3 for the official RYA license to arrive (I have sent the provisional I received).

Do you regularly get asked for this when sailing? Will I get into trouble for sailing without it? I will be sailing in the Ionian Sea (Preveza, Paxos, Corfu) for 4 weeks.

VHF and EPIRB won't have a chance to be reprogrammed to my own MMSI, too.

Thanks!
SV Blissful

I have all my various radio licenses in with my papers, but in 3 summers in Greece have not been asked for them yet. Registration, passports, and insurance, and the TEPAI payment are the ones they consistently scrutinize.
It might be different with a boat from another jurisdiction - or simply a different Coast Guard agent. One asked about flares and safety gear!

I have sailed countries from as far E as Turkey to as far West as Perth, Australia and most of the EU countries.. I have never been asked for a VHF licence in over 40yrs of sailing my own or others boats.
Mind, if I did it would likely be queried as the 1984 photo bears little resemblance to the wrinkled weather worn face of today..

Re: Inspected documents in Greece

The Polish ship station licence does take a while, especially now that it is high season. Your RYA licence is an absolute requirement for them to be able to issue the ship station licence.

Note that having a ship station licence is one of the requirements, when sailing international waters, according to Polish maritime law. That means that if you do not have one, while sailing the seas, and an accident would occur and the insurance company is involved, the insurance company will have an excuses not to payout, because you did not meet the requirements of Polish maritime laws.
