Looking at heading to la Paz in March. If I’m wanting to hang out in sea of Cortez until end of hurricane season do I still have to leave country then come back in???

yes you will need to do the migration.
bus is not much money and flights are also cheap to tj airport... the n across border to usa and back to airport for return to your boat.
buses are also with wifi, toilets and comfort. there are not many remaining chikkin buses that became so notorious in past

I heard the downside to overstaying your 6 month visa is paying about $45 for new visa and a stern scolding. I may overstay by 1 month this year.

overstaying is illegal. they charged me 1200 pesos for being illegal when i lost my 6 month visa(at the time that was 120 usd.). oopsy and you MUST do the penalty in spanish. you meet with a lawyer in inm office. business and legal issues are always carried out in national language.
after i paid my penalty i was able to get my fm3 at regular price. i had to await permission by lawyer before purchasing my new visa. they are able to nix that deal.

i hope you realize some influential mexican port officials read this forum. they come to me asking if you are for real then all hell breaks loose.

LOL, OMG, the chicken busses! I once rode from TJ to PV taking the chicken bus transit. I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. Listen folks, you have not lived until you've done THAT route, on THAT line of busses with THOSE people. Was an...um, adventure. Awesome reference, Ms. Z.

chikkin buses were fun -- quite a unique experience. i took one from san felipe to ensenada., was most interesting and uniquely enlightening. was not your average greyhound, for sure.

these new buses are POSSSHHHH. no critters allowed other than 2 legged.

Re: Heading to Mexico in March.

We rented a car to drive from La Paz to Tijuana. A really beautiful drive in the spring. I hope to do it again in a camper someday. But our friend Mig just went to the airport, played stupid and obstinate and got his stamp there in La Paz. Herb Payson's book about his families cruise to the South Pacific has many parts devoted to playing dumb and stubborn in foreign government offices.

If you are already dumb and stubborn, do you still have to play act?

Re: Heading to Mexico in March.

Illegal procedure, then dumb and obstinate... have you any idea what this sort of process does for those who follow in your wake?

Bad karma, bad idea, bad thing to do for the cruising community in general.

Re: Heading to Mexico in March.

I am not advocating any action, just commenting. But I doubt acting dumb in countries as populated as Mexico will affect anyone travelling behind you. Also, to 1 Sunseeker, that is called character acting, or possibly sometimes lack of character acting.

Re: Heading to Mexico in March.

commenting is how mexican officials learned there were fakeries in papers in ports in mexico and launched agace to counter that, with 1600 boats being tagged a s illegal.
yes they DO follow up and, yes, it DOES affect ALL cruisers in this country.

Only if you stay longer than 180 days....

Pretty easy to do a quick visa run from most of the SoC...combine it with a sure to be needed parts pickup.
