FL Registered sailing vessel... do I need to document to refer by name?

I have my boat registered in FL. I want to name it, but I don't want to go through the time, hassle, and expense of registering it with the CG. (my boat was built in 1982, so it's "antique" and costs $4/ yr to renew the registration)

Can I just slap my chosen name on the hull (Hermitage) and call it happy, leaving the state registration decals as-is? Is there any problem in identifying as S/V Hermitage over official radio communication? Any gotchas I need to consider?

Yes, name it anything you want.

Re: FL Registered sailing vessel... do I need to document to refer by name?

Probably 75% of the boats in Florida are not CG documented. Almost all of those have at least a name and some have a hailing port.

With FL registration, you are only required to show registration numbers and current tag. No name or hailing port.

CG documented boats are required to show the name and the hailing port. No registration numbers, but still must display tag.

Otherwise, naming your boat, really only helps with radio communications and bridge tenders. You may name it anything you wish, and could change it anytime you want.
