They are not "new infections", they are just newly confirmed. America is testing more people than any other country in the world. As just one example, over two weeks ago Los Angeles county opened up free testing to ALL, prior to that actual sickness or symptoms were required. The county population is over TEN MILLION people, and that's not counting the estimated 1-2 MILLION undocumented people. With all these people, the total confirmed cases so far total LESS THAN ONE THIRD OF ONE PERCENT.

Neighboring Orange County (home of Disneyland, for a landmark), with a population over 3 million people (+ undoc) confirmed cases about ONE FIFT of one percent, and a grand total of 80 deaths. In an average three month period (first cases in So Cal were in the beginning of February) there are 60 traffic deaths in the same county. But I don't see anybody closing the freeways.

With all this testing, every day a large percentage of the new positive cases have had little to no symptoms. Ongoing antigen testing is showing that many millions of people have had the virus in their body and never even knew it. Over 20% of random antigen in NYC tested positive. These antigen tests are not conducted on patients, but random, apparently healthy individuals.

The really important numbers are the RATE of positive tested, and of course the death rate. Both of these rates have been declining for weeks.

There are plenty of statistics to make everyone happy. Yes the US has tested more than any other nation but rank 35th in testing as a percent of the population. They also rank first in total deaths but ninth in deaths as a percent of total population out of 215 reporting countries.
