They can decompose very rapidly or explosively if they are exposed to only slight heat, friction, mechanical shock or contamination with incompatible materials. Containers are lost pretty much every year. Seldom from U.S. flag ships, but it could happen when carelessness or greed prevail, and poor routing is used or inadequate lashing. And DOES happen to other ships in this fiercely competitive industry.
