Coast guard reg name and hailing

Mine has been that way for 10 years and prior to that boat, 11 years with the old one. I don't know the requirement but I can attest that the CG doesn't care and neither does any foreign CG or harbor patrol anywhere in the Caribbean

I'm not aware of any regulation that you put either one anywhere. Many thousands of boats have no name. If the boat is federally documented, you have to name it and give it a hailing port, which can be some village in Death Valley, but not display either. Only the hull number identifies the hull.

So technically, no, you cannot put the name in one place and the hailing port in another. As mentioned above, though, it is a rarely-enforced regulation.



Of course, these are the regulations for documented boats. There is no requirement that you document your recreational vessel. If your boat is not documented then you can do anything you want with the name. A LOT of the boats that you see -- even those with a name and hailing port on them -- are not actually documented, and so do not need to adhere to the Coast Guard regulations.

The name and hailing port of a recreational vessel must be marked together on some clearly visible exterior part of the hull.
Many recreational vessels will place the vessel name and hailing port on the stern, and vessel name on both sides of the bow, which is required for a commercial vessel. Although not required for a recreational vessel, this is an acceptable option.
The above requirement for vessel name and hailing port to be clearly visible may necessitate duplicating the name and hailing port on either side of the hull.

And the hailing port must be a legit mailing address. I sail out of the lower Niagara river and wanted to put Niagara as a hailing port. They rejected it as not having a legit post office address. But wait, all the equipment the CG uses out of the Youngstown station has Niagara marked on the transom. Guess as Orwell sez, some pigs are more equal than others.

I thought the name and port needed to be on the transom of a documented vessel, on a state reg. vessel you don't need either just the state reg. no. on both sides.

Just put the name and port on the back as convention suggest but then add the name in large letters on the side, much easier to read!

Well there is a town of Niagara, NY with two zip codes so the CG should be ok with it for a hailing port.

thats what ill do, put the name and hailing port in 3 inch letters on the stern, and name on the sides in larger print

FWIW, the external markings must be at least 4" in height.
