Looking at purchasing a sailboat located in Virginia. I am Canadian and will Federally register it in Canada ASAP (after it is undocumented from USGC) and will bring to Nova Scotia in the spring and pay the taxes. Is there a time I have to get the boat out of state to avoid Virginia taxes as I can't move it until April. Does it matter if in the water for the winter or out? If I get a cruising permit after purchasing it does this make a difference as far as taxes are concerned?

We're from Ontario and are stuck in Virginia for the winter waiting for a new engine. If you need a tonnage measurement for the boat, I am a Transport Canada Appointed Tonnage Measurer and can help with that. Less than 12m LOA you use the assigned measurement or can measure yourself with the simplified method if the TML is less than 15m unless its a catamaran.

If you register the boat in Canada on purchase, there will be no VA tax due.
No duties or taxes will be due in Canada til' you hit Canadian waters.
