At least nowadays, when they take half of our income, we get some services. I can't help but wonder what people got 1,000 years ago, other than the opportunity to finance some king schidt's lavish lifestyle.

I think the service people got was the ability to stay alive (barely). Back then you worked for the Lord, and he (always a he) allowed you just enough to stay alive.

The modern parallel would be paying wages that barely allow people to keep a roof and put food on the table. Thankfully our wealthy Barrons of today would never be so cruel and greedy as to make people work below a wage that they could live on.

Right. Back in the 20th century, we had a long, slow climb out of that situation. Then came the '90s. I don't want to think about what our situation would be like, if we hadn't bought our hovel when we did. (Which was about ten years later than it ought to have been.)
