I brought my
boat into
USA in January. I was told to say "I wish to make formal entry".
And this would begin the process of importation and, ultimately,
import duty.
The
customs guy had no idea what I was talking about - and nothing happened.
I made some inquiries but I really did not know what to do to
import and pay the duty.
I was very busy fitting out the boat until April when I traveled to
Bahamas.
I then tried again through the
boat broker who put me in touch with his custom's
broker.
They told me to do the same thing again when returning to the USA.
"formal entry - pay duty etc"
I arrived on a Sunday and the
customs agents cleared me and then told me to come back to another office on Monday. I did, and they had no idea what I was talking about.
In any case the
broker then handled it all with a customs bond(boat broker's) and I wired the
money, and apparently the duty is paid.
So -imperative to use a customs broker and be pro-active to pay it.
