Re: You Tube - Mads rebuild of Athena

I think I understand now how so many
boats I see out there are cobbled together with horrible upgrades and "fixes' that ar frankly just awful craftsmanship.

When a lot folks look at someone like Mads and say he is being "OCD" while he is simply just doing things right it is an "aha moment" here. That is not OCD. Do it right or fix it again later.

Even Mads has his dumb moments like reusing that used up rudder stock instead of having a new one made by a professional. All the work and expense to put a new skin and foam core around what was a crappy inferior product when it was new, and is now in much weakened structurally compromised metallurgical state, and then performing amateur stainless welding on top of that means he would have been better off just leaving the old rudder in place IMHO.

Mads is definitely NOT OCD. I like him and his channel a LOT, don't get me wrong. But I think many folks feel threatened when they see someone trying hard to do things right and realize that the garbage work they are doing to their own boats is only adding negative value to them in the long run.

Very entertaining and informative channel, I really like his high quality videos.

But come on people, don't get so technical! Even he has admitted, he has the disorder, just like I do.

I only wish I had his budget for the new top of the line tools he is always buying.

He has done that too! He meticulously rebuilt a spiffy galley counter with expensive top. It looked great, and then he trashed it...

Mads is definitely NOT OCD...
He is!! ...in a good way.

That isn't OCD that is just simple "poor planning."

That galley project was doomed before he started it because of the issue with the hull structural members. He F-ed up and got the cart ahead of the horse. Did you see the "heat map" of the hull stresses with the compromised wet core? He had to fix that issue or have a seriously weak boat he couldn't trust outside of sight of land.

How is that OCD?

Hey Blackheron, do not dispute indernet findings - this is right out from Google:

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a common, chronic and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring behaviors such as sanding fiberglass that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.

Big fan here. I think he does an incredible job with his channel. He's hilarious and does not cut corners. Can't wait to see his sailing vids with the woman who is clearly the love of his life (Ava). I absolutely need some of that spiffy merchandise!

See yoouu!

And of course Andy is a commercial technician. His projects are for his customers (except the Bertram he's working on now) so they have to be perfect.
Mads keeps at things till they are perfect because he wants it that way. Not OCD at all. I used to work for a guy who was OCD, totally different beast.

Re: You Tube - Mads rebuild of Athena

Been watching him for a few years. Have a shirt and a coffee mug too to help him a bit.
Every time I watch him I learn something. I don't think of him as having ocd at all, but I think its his level of commitment. He clearly is learning as he goes along, as did most of us. The rudder is a good example of how meticulous he is. He has done a incredible amount of work on that boat and I am sure that to him its all worth it. People bitch about him not sailing but I think that is bs. He will sail when he is ready. There are a ton of sailing vlogs out there. I watch his to see him learn and possible learn while being entertained. And I am, every week. One day he and his girl/fiance will go off cruising and then we will have another type of vlogs from him.

I was lucky enough to meet Mads at a meetup in Los Angeles. He’s a great guy in person! And, he’s surprisingly tall!
