Wooden mast

My mast is in a tabernacle and is currently laid on the deck for maintenance. The mast foot is cut at an angle of about 5 degrees which matches a teak wedge within the tabernacle. Question is when I re step the mast should I grease/lubricate the mast foot to ensure smooth contact with the teak wedge or just put it up dry?. When I unstepped it it took a bit of persuasion to get it started.

Thanks

Mike

Re: Wooden mast

if the teak wedge is fixed in place, you can. If it's held in only by compression and friction, then lube might make it slide out.

Re: Wooden mast

Thanks, The teak wedge is completely captive in the base of the tabernacle. I am thinking it would be better if the mast foot made a solid connection with the teak wedge, if it was on a bed of grease it may slip side to side and continually bump into the side of the tabernacle. I have no previous experience of this just thought someone might have done it all before.
