Windlas Gears

Hello All:

I've jsut spent $400 rebuilding an Nillson windlass. I have now found out that one of the gears is pretty near shot. Maxwell (who bought Nilson) is not making parts for these anymore. Does anyone know whether these windlasses are put together with generic gears (and a source for them) or are they cutom made? I suspect cutom made.

See Nilsson winch service and spares. DC motors

If the foregoing is of no help, depending upon where you are located, you may also find that having a replacement gear machined is not all that expensive if you have the old gear at hand.

Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt.

Good Luck!

Thanks Hylite.

I do have the gear. And now for an ignorant question. Where do you get these things machined? a Machine shop?

If you go to this site. Bostongear.com your source for speed reducers, gears and power transmission components for industrial applications and click on the "Distributor Locator" you can find someone in your area. If your gear is generic they will most likely be able to find it, but I doubt it. Are you still in Astoria?

Here in Seattle we have "Gear Works" but I believe Portland would be closer. Gear manufacturers are usually pretty busy so don't procrastinate too long.

These guys were around when I was a kid living in Portland. Premier-Gear and Machine Works
