Re: Who's you favorite yacht architect?

Holman&Pye designed the Oyster. Is with the Amel like a Panzer in the water and surprisingly steady under all sails and fast.

Re: Who's you favorite yacht architect?

People Nautor Swan have hired aren’t a bad list:
S&S
Ron Holland
German Frers
Juan K

Oh, and I’ve got a Ron H. I hear what people say about blade rudders, but a well built spade rudder has a lot going for it.

The lines put on paper, and then on water by Morelli and Melvin are pretty sexy looking.

I’m going with Bob Perry for pretty boats, you may not like their characteristics but to me they are quite striking

Re: Who's you favorite yacht architect?

Partial to Morelli and Melvin for wow.

Dick Newick for classic stuff.

Richard Woods for his creativity.

Chris White who told me one of the smartest pieces of advice I’ve ever received: “It costs just as much money and time to build a piece of junk as a good boat. Might as well build a good one.”

Kurt Hughes for mathematically precise designs.

Rob Denny for his proas but more so for his sharing of information and ideas and his “you can do it” attitude and advice.

Bob Oram has some nice boats.

Derek Kelsall with his flat panel construction ideas.

Re: Who's you favorite yacht architect?

I like the two forays into cruising yachts by Doug Peterson. The Kelley-Peterson hull was used in many other boats that came later. The long waterline gives speed and the cut-away fore and aft keel with less wetted-surface means less drag. Comfortable and fast.

There are many great designers and hard to name any favorite. The only designer I actually met left me wishing we had not met. (At a John Neal weekend course.) He put down every other designer's work we looked at. And used horrible nicknames, like Island Piglet. Just by personality, I will steer clear of him.

Rob Humphreys for a good looking performance cruiser today. German Frees in the 80's and they still look good and not so dated.

Different designers for different uses. I have had very heavy, medium, and Ultralight.

Tom Hanks. Ingenious use of old out house for main sail and I especially liked the bamboo decks
