Where can I get my paint shaken?

If you are talking about settled bottom paint, a drill mixer will do a better job, and you should re-mix just before applying. Really, this is true of all paints, but most specifically bottom paints.


The best style depends on the paint type.

West Marine will shake it for you. Paint stores won't because bottom paint is so heavy it can break their shaker.

My Blair Tornado II paint shaker is an excellent tool that works great whenever I need to perform bottom service. It is especially handy when doing an epoxy barrier coat, permitting mixing the base prior to mixing in the hardener.

The only long term detriment is random spring failures, that have been addressed so far by using w/ a slightly shorter spring. They sell spring kits, but I haven't needed them yet.

My experience is most locations w/ shakers refuse to shake a container that has already been opened.

I typically use a mixer on a drill rather than shaking. In a pinch you can make an acceptable mixing tool from a wire coat hanger.

You need one if you are doing bottom paint- the stuff settles quickly. Just be careful; these things are near the top of my "Make a Mess in an Istant" list. With really settled paint, you can spin the can rather than the paint.

I've always liked this style, not because they are the most efficient--they are not for thick liquids--but because they are much easier to clean. I got a bunch from a lab that was closing.


More efficient styles often loose efficiency after a few dozen uses, when they become caked with dried paint.

I like that, Thinwater. I have two metal mixer bits, but they are more complicated than yours, and a pain to clean. The plastic one that I cited has only the advantage of being very cheap. Any idea of a source?

One way to minimize the mess is punch a hole the size of your stirrer shaft in the center of a can lid that fits the can you are stirring. Tap the lid down firmly and spin away. Very little will escape.

I just used some Total Boat topside primer that specified NOT to shake it. They want you to stir the solids from the bottom of the can, and it takes some doing! I had serious doubts that it was possible. However, after about 15 minutes it was liquefied.

We use the big cans, and bought a longer shaft, heavy duty stirrer from the big box hardware store. Works fine. Does spatter.
