Some sticky LED strip, and a few minutes with the side cutters and soldering iron.

More light and far less amps.

Brilliant! (pun intended )

Just one thing, LEDs hate heat, it really shortens their life. Luminaires designed with LED sources take this (heat dissipation) into account from the design phase. Those designed for FLs do not. Time will tell if it will be an issue in your case.

Did the same thing in our engine room. Plus, added a few more strips. Lit it up like an operating room and the cost to do so was quite reasonable.

I don't think LED's have anything to do with being a cheapskate.
They're just BETTER !

Sure, but modifying a flouro was cheaper than buying a new LED fitting.

I have modified our old CFL equipped (and nice, but expensive) wood framed Alpenglow lamp with both white and red LED's.
The new ones come that way.
