What's Wrong With This Picture?
I've seen boats like this in real life several times, but as a double page photo spread in a well known sailing magazine portrayed as how to do it? Really?
This is why so many people say, "Solar Doesn't Work".
Of course it doesn't when there's a ton of other stuff ABOVE IT !
Last summer in the Canadian Gulf Islands, I saw a Lord Nelson 41 with a very well constructed arch/bimini, but with nearly the identical setup above the panels...
Argh.

Re: What's Wrong With This Picture?
It's also one reason people motor a lot--their boats don't sail so well with all that windage and extra weight.

I think it is very clever of them to keep one solar panel in the shade of the mainsail, so it will stay cooler and produce higher power.
If you look carefully in the shadow of the dodger, that'd be Jethro Clampett driving the boat!

Not only the solar panels, but look at the GPS antennas. Put on a high point of the boat. They are better at a low point to reduce movement from roll and pitch.

LOL!
In general, the beauty of a sailboat is generally ruined by all those lines, rigging, railings, davits, ugly little boats hanging on them, etc, etc.
As a hotrodder, this is my kinda boat:

Or, how about Stormy Weather, by Olin Stephens.

Re: What's Wrong With This Picture?
Actually, Stormy Weather was cruised and still is. From here:
Quote:
Stormy Weather is one of the best-known and best-loved classic yachts sailing today.
She is a comfortable and practical cruising boat, and attracts much admiration and affection wherever she drops anchor. She is also an enthusiastic participant in classic yacht regattas, regularly defending her reputation as a fast ocean-racer.
A 54-foot yawl, she has accommodation for six guests, and two crew. Stormy Weather is based in Antibes, France.
Designed by Olin Stephens when he was only twenty-five, Stormy Weather was launched from the Henry Nevins yard in New York in 1934. The following year she won both the Newport-Bergen Transatlantic race and the Fastnet race. This was the beginning of an illustrious racing career.

Re: What's Wrong With This Picture?
That's my complaint about solar. So many people worry about a lot of things in case they get in a storm. (like : "oh never use davits...") then they load their boat up like that! I just wouldnt want my boat to LOOK like that!

Mark,
EGGZactly.
That's why mine is behind the windshield at deck level.
12 satellites every time.
And Don, with all that crap above the panels, a trickle charge is all they'd ever get !

Re: What's Wrong With This Picture?
There's a 41' boat in the harbor with so much crap on the stern and on the arch that can't tell if anyone is in the cockpit. They pulled in stern to and the line handler couldn't figure out how to get to the chocks to secure the stern lines.

I don't see anything wrong with THAT picture! He is to be congratulated on keeping the economy "floating"! Give the guy a break! It's the size and the location of the toys that matter... Mauritz
