I always called any money pit activity a "mushroom" project. I dunno - boats may very well be like that - only worse. I've never done a boat salvage project.

As far as the hull repairs, I'd give some credence to what Atoll is saying. He took on a project in the form of a Macwester 26, although I'm not sure whether or not it was a salvage boat. By the pics, he did a fair amount of glass work on it. It's a good idea to get an opinion from someone who has actually done the work contemplated. I wouldn't have a clue about glass work. (I'm pretty good with horse-hair plaster tho - )

I always enjoyed working on the money pit though. It was sometimes a history lesson. If you enjoy working with old stuff - then maybe you should just do your thing and not worry about the no-romance-always-practical naysayer types.

i admit i love older stuff.
my first major boating dream was an old steam ship.
i figured i could find one derelict and cheep.... HA
cheapest i found was 14 million. had the idea of running it on driftwood...

i have always loved older 80's cars. i have owned,
1987 new yorker turbo. it talked, had an electronic dash, and was quick, also rusty...
1985, 1987 300ZX. both talked, had electronic dashes, and had a boot load of power... until the seat detached from the rest of the unitbody...
1984 720 pickup, had 4 cylinders and 8 plugs....
all old junk, but fun. spent many hours learning systems and reading wireing diagrams. i learned much from them.
the key i learned was they were good for transportation, but they could never be made to be worth what a new car is worth.
i will tell you one thing, i never got to the end or repairs.
moneypits... gag.
i hope a boat that got wet inside, would not be one.

if i go inspect it should i bring a drill?
wow. perhaps i should just grab one of the 45' commanders.....

Hay scoobert, Save yourself a bunch of trouble and start looking at Porn or something!! Your boat finding skills leave a bunch to be desired!! LOL These slabs were junk when they were made and don't improve with a sinking !! theres more damage to the hull then anyone would think about repairing!! Save yourself and your family a bunch of discontent and money, and take up a new hobby, and stop trying to get folks all hot with your trolling LOL you and I both know this THING( its no boat at least right now) will never be anything you or most anyone else will ever do anything with !! Just sayin go back to hooking two monos into a Cat, ya have a better chance then putting your family in a floating coffin!! like this slab

i have no idea on shafts or seals, or engine beds. if the shafts are bent, i would not buy it, i understand custom shafts can run $4000 each. if it was a common part, i would say $1200 each.
one prop is shot for sure, but they can fix props now?>.

i have to admit, i didn't know copper would not work for the wiring?
i looked at another boat that was vandalized, it had regular home copper wiring hanging out...?
OK, well -- add it all up. Love all you want, but if the numbers don't work, walk away.

Yes, marine grade wiring is tin-coated copper. It's expensive, but if you want it to work, then you shouldn't cut corners. There's not any credible way to boat which is cheap, that I have ever found, apart from buying a Laser and sticking with it.

Wiring..... any wiring subject to salt water immersion of more than a few hours and not flushed with fresh water and dried will be corroded. The cost to totally rewire the boat with proper marine grade AC & DC conductors, breakers, switches, panels, lights etc. will be in excess of $60k (materials only).

No one who knows anything about boats would attempt this on such a low quality vessel.

I noticed from the photos that the hull was distorted in a way suggesting the engine beds had shifted or were otherwise displaced. There are a lot of lines no longer true. Lots of hull damage requiring probable total removal of the engines.

Re: whats it worth?

So, how do you know there is anything wrong with the boat? Have you had a survey done? Sometimes boats go on the market for a fraction of their full retail price for reasons unrelated to the boat itself....female trouble, for example. Have a survey done and then come back and talk about it.
