What size rope for a Cal 27

I just bought a Cal 27 and want to replace all the running rigging. Some looks pretty worn and some is very mildewed. What size rope should I use to replace the current rigging for halyards and sheets.

The boat has a mainsail of 154 sq ft and a genoa of 181 sq ft. It has a spinnaker pole but no spinnaker.

The current stuff looked like 3/8" for the halyards and either 1/2" or 5/8" for the main and sheets.

Thanks

3/8" should be strong enough for everything, but for the sheets consider upsizing to make them easier to handle. Just make sure they fit through the required blocks, etc.

If you upsize you can go with less expensive line since it has greater strength. For sheets I'm a big fan of 8 strand brait as it's easy on the hands, does not kink, and collapses into a smaller "pile" than three strand or double braid. But it's "stretchy" so if you're racing it would not be appropriate.

Re: What size rope for a Cal 27

I have a Bristol 27 and all the running rigging is 3/8" except the jib sheet which is 1/2".

My boat sat on the hard for 5 years before I bought it in 2011.

I was able to wash the main and jib halyards and they are still in use

Re: What size rope for a Cal 27

I found out that my boat uses mostly 1/4, 3/8, and 7/16.

I found a supplier from North Carolina that sells double braid on Ebay for a fraction of the price you can buy it anywhere else. 100 feet or more costs less than 20 feet from a marine supplier.

Check it out:
