1.I've always wanted to try shooting Kiwigrip with a griptex or similar sand added to it through a bed-liner gun. They're
cheap as chips, about 30$ and you can buy new cans for the base for about 5$.
I have shot a mix of
gelcoat and the grit additive, gets a nice raindrop pattern that mimics certain non-skids with vastly improved grip.
2. When using the grit additive for projects where I couldn't spray, I've just rolled it using a 3/8"nap roller to good effect, Personally I've never been a fan of the
paint grit
paint paint layers, Mix it into the paint, roll it on. Roll a second coat a few years later when it looks shitty. Less fuss, less mess.
3. I have used the 2 part tintable
bed liner kits to great effect on
boats, I get the auto
parts shop to do a colour match from a
hatch lid or similar, mix about 10% more pigment than they say in, and shoot it on to do lips of things like sport
fishing boat cockpits where they just mangle the
gelcoat and there's never nonskid from the factory. Tons of texture, tons of grip after you scrub it the first time, it seems to form a blush like
epoxy.
4. My
current train of thought is to try a non
marine product, Deck-Kote. It was used on the concrete steps for someone's
fiberglass sundeck, I patched that
deck 14 years ago, rolled on a coat to match the steps. It's outlasted anything I've ever seen for
boats or trucks. They have a rubber grip additive now and a texture roller for very industrial high grip needs, but otherwise it seems to be very similar to kiwi grip with a better primer/topcoat system.
