Well I'll be using two pot Cameleon paint. I'll roll it on and use their slowest catalyser (I think there are 3)

They supply mainly to industry but their prices are a fraction of the Big Boys (International etc)

3M is one of their distributors so maybe they have outlets in New Zealand?

As a matter of interest what color are you planning?

As Coopec suggests, go with a 2-part polyurethane. It's a bit more effort, having to mix and spread in small batches and follow the directions to the letter. In our experience it lasts more- almost five times as long. Since the arduous prep process is essentially the same for both types of paint, it makes sense to do it once and spend time sailing instead of repainting five times in the interim.

Re: What paint to uae? ⛵⛵

For fibreglass decks, 2-part polyurethane is almost always the paint of choice. The roll-and-tip technique works fine. The differences between brands are minor, compared to the difference between 2-part urethane and any other kind of paint.

You may think (as I once did) that you can save a couple hundred dollars by using enamel or 1-part polyurethane. You can't. It'll look like crap after 4-5 years no matter how well you do the job, while the good stuff lasts for at least a couple of decades as long as you're thorough about the prep work.

Re: What paint to uae? ⛵⛵

Expecting "a couple of decades" from even the best two part polyurethane paints on a deck would be highly optimistic, in my experience. Maybe in a cloudy climate, in a high latitude, hauled out and covered for half the year, but the tropical sun will take it's toll LONG before your paint job sees a twentieth birthday.

I agree that a 3 to 5X lifespan over a one pot paint is reasonable. But a FAR more realistic exception is 7 to 12 years from a two part paint with horizontal sun exposure.

Hi There

Go and see your Altex Paint Wholesaler... they will often give you a discount if you complain enough...Say that they were recommended to you... They can also send around a rep it you need one...

It is a paint system you are applying ..... it is not like painting a bedroom.

Altex are the best quality paints and service...

Ray.

As you’re in the “ Land of the Long White Cloud” I’d be going with Altex as suggested previously. They will tell you how to prepare, under coats needed and so on. Prepare well and you should get ten years or more on a glass hull. If you’re not spraying use two people to “ roll and tip” , pick your weather , check out how to on youtube , it should look terrific !

For my deck I use White Knight oil based paving paint as the primer paint. Then it's topped off with Kiwi grip water based deck paint for the non skid. Check out the Youtube videos on how to apply and get the right textured finish. Kiwi Grip is the best product to come out of New Zealand. You will use it eventually so may as well start of with the best product.

What paint to use depends on what you're priorities are.
Aesthetics or non-skid properties?

Some water based latex paints are durable, soft underfoot and have good non-skid properties. Easy to apply and touch up and very resistant to impact damage (like dropping things).

I agree with those who have suggested Altex. I have their anti fouling but use Cameleon for other paintwork because I get a good price and they are local.
