what paint , how and why ?

Good afternoon all ,
I received a coronado 35 and have to repaint the bottom as well top of the boat.
However I just made some pictures and like to ask if somebody could give me an advice which paint etc. how to apply?
I have no information about the past of this boat.
under the bottom paint is a grey (paint , gelcoat ) or may the polyester itself.
However all your help is very welcome ....please see below some pictures.

From experience...Pettit copper-based anti-fouling bottom paint is the best there is; not cheap though. (Disclaimer...no affiliation whatsoever with Pettit.) Mauritz

Re: what paint , how and why ?

thanks Teknav,
But just some questions. what is the grey area under the black paint ? is it the polyester or the gelcoat ( I tried to scratch under the grey one without success)? do I need to grind down the black paint of the bottom area until everything is grey ? what about the corrosion , from where is the corrosion coming ? What would be done on the side of the boat ? grind down to the grey to reach also the grey area , primer and then paint ?
Which paint you suggest for the top side of the boat ? also Petite ?
Thx for all your help and advise

Re: what paint , how and why ?

If you are lucky, the gray is INTERPROTECT 2000E. Try not to damage this. It will limit water ingress to the matrix and prevent gel coat blistering.

There are "eco friendly" chemical strippers that will remove old bottom paint without damaging gel coat or barrier coats.

I found the reps from Interlux and Pettit very helpful regarding compatability and application. Find out when one will be in town and meet with them.

Re: what paint , how and why ?

The corrosion is odd if it is iron oxide. Perhaps it is not? There should not be any iron alongside a fiberglass hull. I can't see where the rust bleeding is coming down from. Is it something on deck or perhaps was on deck at one time?

If the gray coating is really really hard then chances are good it is Interlux 2000. Try sanding on it a little and see if it gums up your sand paper or not.

If your bottom paint is delaminating then chances are good that it needs to be removed. Start by knocking off what you can with a really high pressure industrial grade pressure washer that you rent, 5000 PSI, and go for it. The rest can come off with chemicals. Put down tarps so you do not contaminate the soil with copper or possibly with arsenic or TBT.

Re: what paint , how and why ?

Don Casey put out a book called 'This Old Boat' you might want to invest in. The book goes very in depth about the different types of paint, cleaners, caulking, methods of application, as well as most every other topic under the sun a boat owner should know about.

When I painted my old boat last year I used old school marine enamels mixed with mineral spirits, paint thinner and liquid hardener. Took forever to mix it just right but it didn't really matter whether I roll and tipped it or just brushed it once it was mixed right (although you're probably better off going with something more modern anyway)

My computer isn't loading your pictures so I can't respond much in regards to the corrosion. Hull zinc maybe?
Good luck
-Ryan

For interlux product infomation go to www.yachtpaintforum.com
There is an interlux guy that can answer all your questions there. I'm redoing my boat's bottom now and that site was very helpful in getting my questions answered.

The "corrosion" is clearly caused by something liquid that has run down the side of the boat and has stained or otherwise discolored the anti fouling paint. I see this all the time when certain cleaning products are used on the topsides. I suppose it's possible that something made of iron or mild steel was on deck and allowed to rust and that rust ran down the side of the boat during a rain or washdown or something (and the color of the discoloration certainly looks like rust) but that doesn't seem too likely, IMHO.
