What is the best cleaning product for cleaning sails?

I was putting on some sail covers this morning and noticed some brown marks on the brand new sails. I rubbed most off with a wet rag but is there a detergent or cleaning product I can use? (I'd rather use some kitchen or laundry product than buy a product from the local boat shop (I notice they have a "sail and canvas cleaner" for $24 )

Sails are polyester, so you can wash them with any soap or detergent. Failing that, you might thy one of Mr Clean's Magic erasers, if they have them in your area--it's a cleaning sponge with mild oxalic acid--get the stain off, then rinse thoroughly with water.
I'd stay away from chlorine-based bleaches.....

Thanks Ben.

That sounds like good advice. I'll steer clear of bleaches, and anything like turpentine, acetone, petroleum products etc

Hey Coopec43, let me know if you end up using one of these; I'd like some feedback if you do...

Thanks Neville
I notice Starbrite scrubber is sold in many marine outlets. Next time I am near one I will grab a Star Brite sponge

In the meantime I wonder how good these are (They are sold at Woolworths)
