What is going on here?

We were walking a marina and came across a HAKE Seaward 38? Sailboat with these fins on the back. I don't understand their function? See pic attached. Click image for larger version

Re: What is going on here?

I think that these boats are made to be beached. Twin rudders?

Re: What is going on here?

Judging by the brackets on the transom and the notches in the panels near the top I would say they are retractable twin rudders

Re: What is going on here?

Yes, rudders.

Also notice the protrusion just forward of the mast. The structural beam on which the lifting keel rises.

Interesting boat designed in Florida and for Florida or similar waters.

Also has an option for twin Yanmar engines.

Re: What is going on here?

The Seaward model name includes "RK" for "Rising Keel."

Rising Keel and Rising Rudders.

The rudders are pulled up to allow a shallower draft.

My first boat was a McGregor 26 and it had twin retractable rudders, same thing.

Yes, Seaward 46RK. They were built in the IP plant for a year or so until their parent company purchased Island Packet. We have a Seaward 25 with a fixed wing keel. Very nice boat with high end gear (stainless steel winches etc.) Customer service has been spotty at best but we have high hopes for the future with the IP people now on board.

That's what I was thinking: "Oh, someone took the Mac 26 concept uptown".
