What Do Others Use to Track Maintenance and Repairs ?

My wife and I bought a lil crusier this last year. We have be redoing it all summer and fall. Headding into winter, I have more projects skedualed. My wife (who knows me too well ). Wanted to make sure that the list is complete and loged, she is not one to look over the details. So as I came home one day he handed me this CD and asked if I would install it. The software is called BoatServiceLog. It seems pretty intense for a 26.5 ftr. I do like it but was wondering what others are using. Any info on what others use for maint, parts, service logs, and supplies. Would be nice.

I record major maintenance in the log. That way I always know what date/engine hours/locations/project managers were if I need to check back later.

The log is the boat's official history. If the vet wants to know how old the ship's cat is, I can always look up the date he first signed on as crew.

I keep a composition book and record all maintainence in there. This works well for work I have accomplished. I also have a simple list on a spreadsheet that is a list of all jobs in three different categories 1) need to do, 2) should do, and 3) wish/want to do. I cross the items off the list as I accomplish them but keep the details in the composition book.

The last thing I want laying around is a hardcopy of things to be done and what the last project cost! I prefer to keep that info to myself but good luck with it.

Re: What Do Others Use to Track Maintenance and Repairs ?

I keep a running list in a Word file. At the end of last summer I had 67 items on the list, 36 of them were completed by the end of the season. Each time I get ready to drive down to the marina I review the list item-by-item, pick the tasks I want to do next, then load tools and materials accordingly -- and then drive back home with only a fraction of the work completed.

On the financials, I balance my checkbooks and credit cards and all other spending in Excel. All the boat-related expenses get the word "boat" somewhere in the description line so I can sort the column and total every cent. Of course I've never actually done that, I really don't want to know.

Yeah, I guess I'm a little neurotic. Gov't bureaucrat.

Re: What Do Others Use to Track Maintenance and Repairs ?

I have a master list (Word doc) that is kept at home - divided between "Nice" and "Need".

But as a working document onboard I use a simple notebook - partly so I remember WTF I am meant to be doing and also so I can jot down stuff as and when I need to. Also useful to write down what I need to bring from Home to Boat (and vice verce).

The pages get thrown away when everything is done and the master list updated (when I remember ).

Excel is great for this. You can also just make "Sheets" in your spreadsheet with different things such as provisioning and store locations. Makes it easier to keep track of what you have used for repairs that way. Someone had a great sample of their excel system on a blog a few years back. Ill see if I can find it.

If you want to get really technical you could use something like Filemaker and make a custom Database. I was thinking about doing that when the time comes.
