Re: What are these portlight closures called?

Some great leads and helpful cautions here, thank you all, I think this info should help us get these sorted.

They are called dogs or hold down dogs in this part of the world ,had the last lot made at the local brass bronze foundry at Bowden ,adelaide , using a good one as a pattern ,then to a metal finisher, came out better than new ,verry good price too .⛵️⚓️

Re: What are these portlight closures called?

They are ‘dogs’ functionally, as in “he threw the dogs the hatches open”, in your case, in the form of an eye-nut. Sometimes they are levers, but same name

I believe they are called eye nuts.

I would suggest that the loop nut or eye nut (your choice) is just part of a "dog". But I also agree that some people ignore the clawed part of a dog and focus just on the means of holding something to the claw.

The dog is the combination of a claw (or claw-like device), a threaded stud, and a nut (a winged nut, a loop nut, an eye nut).

Some references (which you can copy and paste into Google Books to find the sources):

cruising English 2001 If the hinged side of the hatch does not have dogs (screw-down knobs, handles, or levers to tighten the hatch) - see how that focuses on the loop nut/winged nut/eye nut/knob and ignores the claw?

and one of the earliest uses in English (not nautical English but masonry English, in which a dog was a metal claw-like structure used to bind two stones together):

Middle English c1458 doggs of Iryn

Then you might ask from where the word dog, for a common animal with a claw, comes. A jolly good question for which no one has a good answer. The usual words for the domesticated or feral animal were Old English c897 hundas (plural), hund (singular).

Best guess is that late Old English c1050 docgena, for a canine, a hound, is an invention, perhaps picked up from German Docke, a doll, a plaything, an object used to amuse children.

The etymology of short words is painfully difficult. A goodly number are childish babble or adult baby-talk words. If you want a real academic headache, try to discover the origin of the flip of dog, by which I mean the word English god, a deity.

They have a large and small option. The ones in your photo look like ABI the version which is sized in between the two from PTF. If you find those let me know, been looking for a long time.

I’ll see if they are still in business. We’ve lost a few of these outfits over the last few years.

Do you remember their name?

Edit: I’m guessing it’s Adelaide Brass Castings. I’ll phone them in the morning,

Re: What are these portlight closures called?

Just a type of wing-nut.
McMaster could have those in S bronze, fairly sure there have them in SS and regular steel.

Try eBay for them. Amazing amount of marine 'things' out there.

Re: What are these portlight closures called?

They look fine. Dissemble, de-rust, prime the base and "knob with two part epoxy primer and top coat. Grease the threads and resemble.

You might consider doing the same thing to the port frames.

Re: What are these portlight closures called?

Just polished up all my portlights, off the boat. Not showed in the pic is the wing nut that was used to dog the opening down as I made them non opening. You might be interested in my curtain solution thoughClick image for larger version
