What am I looking at?
This was under my vberth. Are these the depth sounder? Is plastic fittings ok for the through hulls? Not sure why they are not collected. Total newbie here.

Re: What am I looking at?
Paddle wheel is the knot meter transducer.
The other is probably depth sounder transducer.

Re: What am I looking at?
Transducers are out and there are blank plugs in their place. If you want to read the speed and depth, you'll need to switch them around; bit tricky and wet if in the water, but I've been told it can be done.
Note they will only fit one way - there's an aligning slot that should be fairly obvious, but you might need to twist it a bit to get it lined-up.

Re: What am I looking at?
Looks like the boat is out of the water. Not sure why they are pulled, but simply install them before you splash the boat, and as soon as the boat is in the water check for leaks and tighten/adjust as necessary. You can pull and swap them with blanks while the boat is in the water...I do it frequently on a race boat to clean them. Requires a deft hand and some practice and calmness but it's no big deal.

Re: What am I looking at?
Thanks for the relies. Boat is on the hard. Should these be removed while not on the water?

Re: What am I looking at?
Might be a good idea to remove them while out of the water, just to prevent any accidental damage.

Most people don't, unless they are painting the bottom (take them out so you don't need to tape them off to keep paint off them). One reason they might be out is to let any water that might get into the bilge drain out. It really doesn't matter either way.

Re: What am I looking at?
Take them out and replace with the plugs while painting the bottom. Pull the plugs and replace with the sensors before the boat is launched or they may be painted in place and removal may be very difficult in the water. Do remove at least once during your sailing season and clean them (with the plugs in place while doing this, of course).

Re: What am I looking at?
Get some good silicone grease (not spray) and lightly grease the rubber o-rings of both the plugs and the sensors before you put them in.

Re: What am I looking at?
I had to routinely take out the speed impeller in FL to clean so it would work. It only took a week or two to gum up.
No problem changing in water really though speed and coordination helps.
It is only scary the first time.

We pull the speed log while in the water at the end of every weekend and replace with a plug. Otherwise the paddle wheel becomes a critter home and stops rotating.
We lube the o-rings with vaseline.
I've never pulled the depth transducer. We mask it when we apply anti-fouling.

Re: What am I looking at?
After the silicon lube and replacement, be certain that you examine/monitor them carefully as the boat goes back in the water to ensure there is no leaking. Do this as the slings are lowered, or as the trailer backs it down the ramp, so that you can pull the boat out quickly if there is a problem. Also, a good idea to know where all the other openings are in the hull that are near or below the waterline: seacocks, drains, exhaust if you have an inboard, etc. Check them before launch and monitor them all as the boat goes back in the water.

Re: What am I looking at?
When out of the water pull them out and install the blanks. Any straps around the hull for hauling out shall then not any damage. We take ours out in the water - just be ready to install the blank - we always ensure it is spotless, with no grit and with a good smear of water proof grease. Once back in the water we swop them back and leave them uncovered for an hour or two to check for leaks. The amount of water that tries to come in is actually not significant but we are on a cat and there is not much water pressure - but we do have two transducers, one per hull. Doubt we even have a cupful - we keep several absorbent mats close by, but I generally use my palm as a temporary plug if required and yell for one of the kids if I need something! Where are your softwood plugs? Might be a good idea to keep one adjacent each below water line skin fitting.

Re: What am I looking at?
Launched a boat with the speedo out & no plug in once, sent a crew down below to get the boathook, he came up in a hurry to say we were taking on water but i was able to get the speedo in, under a foot of water. Dumb, but a learning experience. So swapping transducer to plug & back shouldn't be too tricky afloat.
Best, Don

Re: What am I looking at?
Mine has a neat little non return valve in the thru fitting. Pulling the sensor, a small flap closes over the opening. Its not watertight, but slows the water ingress to a trickle.
