Welder in Darwin, AUS?
Hello!
Our windvane has had a rough life and has begun to show small cracks in "the bends"... Next possible stop for welding would be Darwin in Australia.
(Just had a real bad experience in Luganville, Vanuatu! I'm not saying all of the three guys who weld here are bad but this guy, the horror! Argh!)
Anyway, googling gives me a couple of alternatives, but if anyone personally knows of a professional welder in Darwin that can fix a few cracks in aluminum, we would be so thankful! Somewhat close to the marina, there are a number of them on map-search... Of course we can try our own luck but IF anyone has a tip then we would be sweet!
NT welding seems like a good option at first glance, might be expensive?
(Now just hoping that it will last all the way there...)
Cheers!

What you can do is drill a small hole at the end of the crack , that should stop it getting any worse and hopefully hold until you can get a proper weld on to it

Yeah, could have, but... Now there's some sort of poor welding on top of it... After having beaten off all the horrible welding... Fingers crossed!

Re: Welder in Darwin, AUS?
Which marina you heading into in Darwin?
Id get down to Dinah beach yacht club and ask around there.
Its the best yacht club in the world by far.
Its next to the paspaly pearl boats and theres always welders there and workshops that will help you out.
Loads of welders in Darwin. Not many people cant weld in Darwin..
Load of Oil and Gas people up there.
Id help you out myself but im in Spain at moment making my way back to Darwin very very very slowly.

Dinah Beach Cruising Yacht Association – Darwin Northern Territory Australia
They also have the best bands playing in the beergarden there.
Coldest beers and lovely Asian food served up there by the cook.
Good luck.

Re: Welder in Darwin, AUS?
Don't expect too good of a job if it's aged aluminium, salt encrusted and covered in birds**t welding attempt!!
Maybe ask how much to cut out a new one?

Re: Welder in Darwin, AUS?
Dear BruceS,
If you want to do it expensive, try the commercial guys like Darwin Marine Engineering who will come to the marina, remove the part and charge you big $. If you want to do it cheap, ask around at Dinah Beach for an amateur to do the job for cash (most of them are pretty good).
If you're halfway in between, there's a great little Al/ss welding shop on Bishop Street in Winellie. (Sorry, I cant remember their name, but they are nearly opposite the canvas workshop). They have done great work for me at a reasonable price.
Cheers, Ocean Nomad
PS See you at Dinah Beach, its a cruisy place!

Thank you all so much! Seems like Dinah will be the place then. There won't be any problems getting a place in the marina, or is it usually really crowded in june/july? We'll have a look around and se who can fix this poor windvane... Still holding strong, but miles to go!
