Watermaker Noise

HI everyone, would like to hear comments on the amount of noise generated by your water maker, does the triplex pump run quite enough or should it be installed in a “soundproof” enclosure “
I see Danfoss make a slightly different pump but this seems more expensive
I am considering installing a hi pressure pump engine driven, but mounting the pump separate to the engine on its own mountings, and driven by a toothed belt fitted to the engine crankshaft , with “chain tensioner “ similar to the Harley or dirt bike chain tension setup
I believe this arrangement would decrease some the tensioning forces of a vee belt /pulley system, and also prevent engine and pressured pump harmonic vibrations
Your comments would be appreciated, thanks in advance

Re: Watermaker Noise

Buy a spring idler tensioner, used on many cars to automatically keep the serpentine belt tight, no need for a toothed drive belt.
You will need such a device if you don't mount the pump to the motor itself.
Other people have mounted accessories with one side on a hinge and a spring that pulls the accessory to tighten the belt.
You need a self adjuster to allow the engine to move slightly independent of the accessory.
While I have not done it, I believe any mounting except on the engine will be problematic and I wouldn't think you would hear the pump over the engine.

Contact Rich of Cruise RO, I know he has been a part of several of these installations and does help DIY people. If he tries to talk you out of it, I do not believe it will be because he is trying to sell you anything, it will be because it's maybe not a good idea.

My Spectra 150D is very quiet. But is a 12 volt watermaker.

+1 for Spectra.
Humm....click. humm...
I moved the pump to a spot beneath the V berth and now have to set a timer to remember to turn it off because I forget it's even running.
And this is in a 10 meter boat.

Re: Watermaker Noise

I have lived with two types: a Spectra with compact build and a Sea Recovery with a remote pump. Spectra was low noise the other one was clearly audible even though the insulation.

Thinking about the noise level, I would only pick the first one (the Spectra). It was a small model, so maybe this too added to its relative (but not absolute) noise-less-ness.

edit: Spectra model I think 150, 12 Volt it was. I would buy.

Re: Watermaker Noise

You won't even hear the engine driven piston pump over your diesel engine noise.
