Re: Want to mount wood slat in my cockpit locker to hang lines, etc.

I have had success with Liquid Nails from The Big Box store. The last two jobs were a 3-ft 1x3 to hang lines, just like yours. Also a stringer that supports my hydronic hot water heater. Both of these I mixed up epoxy with lots of cabosill to make it as thick as peanut butter. On at least one of those projects, I didn't clamp it long enough and it slowly fell off the wall before it cured. Oops.

The thread that keeps on giving.

truly there are an infinite number of things to use almost

I have had success with this as well.

I didn’t use liquid nails brand. I used PL premium. Straight from Home Depot. I used it to stick a 6" x 10" x 1/2" thick piece of plywood against completely un prepped Fiberglass.

All I did was squirt it on the back of the wood and press it in place with my hand. That’s it. Nothing else. No other work. No clamps, nothing.

It stuck there to the vertical wall and cured.

then I screwed my hydraulic auto pilot pump to it.

and that’s how it sits to this day.

definitely don’t underestimate these hardware store adhesives. They have really come along way.

this is a good point.

Totally agree re: hot glue. But really, holding a piece of wood against a bulkhead while epoxy dries is as simple as slapping some masking tape on it.

Re: Want to mount wood slat in my cockpit locker to hang lines, etc.

I bought a professional grade hot glue gun last year. These have more power and can work up to higher temperatures, allowing for several grades of hot glue that are amazing.

I tested two pieces of thin plywood. After gluing together I tried to rip them apart and the plywood delaminated with the glue joint still intact.

I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008CDS324

Re: Want to mount wood slat in my cockpit locker to hang lines, etc.

I love this thread. Since I can’t use epoxy anymore I have tried all adhesives.

I built my galley with this professional hot glue gun. And it doesn’t just put out that weak hot glue that you can buy at the hardware store. It puts out a polyurethane adhesive.

With enough surface area you can just use hot glue by itself. The glue referenced by Chotu claims higher strength than 5200.

When we need to screw something into a surface like the hull, we sand away everything to get to bare glass for an area slightly larger than the piece we are putting in. Coat the area with thickened epoxy (so it wont run) and place the piece in place. When it stays by itself, soak some fiberglass cloth in resin and cover the piece and fair over the piece to the bare glass underneath.

Re: Want to mount wood slat in my cockpit locker to hang lines, etc.

Lots of options for adhesives. Depends on how much weight.

I find StarBoard (HDPE) to be rather expensive and perhaps overkill for some projects and instead use PVC boards that are impervious to moisture yet work like wood and relatively cheap although not particularly strong. Just a lower cost option when used appropriately.

Make sure not to [permanently] cover your hull number.

Oooooooo!! Great technique

VH B tape on the ends and 6/10 epoxy. The tape holds it while the epoxy cures
