VP 2003 - Heat Exchanger Removal

I'm planning to dismount my heat exchanger ( raw water/antifreeze) and clean it up.

Any suggestion for the procedure for someone who has already done it will be greatly appreciated..

engine is : Volvo Penta 2003

Is the engine running hot ? If not leave it alone or put some caustic soda through it... New seals are silly money from VP. Not a complicated job to do but I only ever did it to find bits of impeller.

I'd be a bit careful of paying "silly money" for a gasket or seal. I had to find seal for my heat exchanger so I went to a local seal supplier and he said they didn't have one but they could easily make one up and they wouldn't be too expensive. But he found one that could be stretched slightly (apparently there are definite limits to the amount you can stretch though)

I'm trying to find the crowd I went to. If these are the people they have shifted premises.

You didn't ask about gaskets, but the conversation went that direction. There are real advantages to being able to make your own, and it's not difficult. You need a few thicknesses of gasket paper and a ball peen hammer. Lay the paper over theface to be gasketed, and cut it by tapping the edges with the round end of the hammer. With a little practice, you can make just about anything you need, and are no longer dependent on being able to find a rare one.

Re: VP 2003 - Heat Exchanger Removal

When messing with my MD2030 I found that the heat exchanger is held in place by the rubber elbows that attach to each end.

Close the seacocks. Drain the raw water by removing the hose from water pump">raw water pump to heat exchanger. Drain the antifreeze by removing the block plug if you have one, otherwise siphon as much as possible through the filler cap (thermostat). Then take off the two elbows, front and rear by removing the 4 hose clamps. The heat exchanger core then slides out toward the generator end of the motor. It is a simple device and easy to clean. Most of the debris I found was chopped up raw water impellers.
Be careful when you reinstall the core that it protrudes equally at front and rear and is securely clamped to prevent leakage between raw water and coolant paths.
A little off topic but I suggest you check the exhaust / water mixer bolted on the back of the expansion tank. I found mine badly corroded and causing much trouble. Replace it with a stainless steel mixer at a lower price than OEM.

Re: VP 2003 - Heat Exchanger Removal

I used to own a 2003 a long time ago You might find the Workshop Manual (page 25) useful. When re-installing, pay particular attention about "hanging the HX loosely" while fitting the pipes to the t'stat and pump. You really need to move the HX around to fit it to the pipes rather than pulling on the pipes - pull too hard and you'll bend them, then they won't seal properly. Pay attention to them when removing as well. If you get to a point where you are pulling on the pipes for any reason stop and re-assess.

Plan on zinc replacement, most probably zinc will be too long, dont worry it is a common happenstance...just cut the Zinc, I would take my heat exchanger to an auto radiator replace shop and get it cleaned and re soldered....it is well worth it.

Re: VP 2003 - Heat Exchanger Removal

I disassemble my heat exchanger every other year and I'm very glad I do it. My engine does not run hot, but I always find little bits of random solidified / calcified stuff. I use new gaskets each time. Like 20 bucks or something. I run a beta 20. I know nothing about engines in any real sense. So this is nice to learn how things work. Definitely do it regularly.

Can't help with your particular model or process. Sorry.

I call BS..... read your own link!

Volvo Car Corp. was sold to Ford over 20 years ago because it was not part of the core business group of the company, and subsequently sold by Ford to the Chinese ten years later.

AB Volvo, the Swedish parent company, is one of the top 5 truck builders in the world, with a heavy manufacturing presence in the US. Add in Volvo bus, Volvo Construction Equip. ( also with manufacturing presence in the US), Volvo Penta ( also US manufacturing) and it’s obvious that the Chinese control none of the parent company.

Re: VP 2003 - Heat Exchanger Removal

Back to the original question ...

1. Yes, hang the beast loosely until ALL the fittings are in place.
2. Plan on changing all the weird seal rings, including both ends of each of the pipes.
3. The large O-ring can be gotten cheaply from McMaster. I don't have the size at hand unfortunately.
4. If you must disassemble the HX, take great care, as the end is thin copper and easily damaged. Best to take it to a GOOD radiator shop.
5. If the HX needs either the housing or tube sheet replaced, you will be better off going to an aftermarket HX, even though some other minor modifications will be needed.
6. If this is a 2003T (turbo) check the oil cooler hidden under the HX.

Have fun

Re: VP 2003 - Heat Exchanger Removal

Open your heat exchanger on the back side of the engine. You will now be able to have a look in the little pipes. If you are able to pass through and they are clean, you will be fine.
You can open also the other side , but mostly this is not necessary if you kept the impellers complete. I've listed the parts you will need below:
