Post Velcro vs Double Sided Tape - How do you mount things?

We all know all boats rock and roll... I mean sway and surge.

So, how do YOU fasten down lamps, put up portraits, etc... Velcro or Double Sided tape?

I'll start us off - Velcro is nice because you can temporarily remove things to clean, but it's not as strong or as thin as double sided tape.

You need to try 3M Extreme/Dual Lock. Based on molded mushrooms instead of fabric, the separation force is about 15 PSI; you need a screwdriver to separate things. As an expereiment I hung 12 pounds of weights in a sheet bag from 2 square inches of this stuff; the adhesive finally failed after 2 months.

The adhesive comes off gelcoat with zero residue, but pealing isn't very easy. It is relatively thick. I general, use on 1 square inch or it will be hard to separate.

Home Depot has it.

Getting a Grip on Velcro - Practical Sailor Print Edition Article

I use regular Velcro if all I really need is good non-skid (under the DVD player), but I use this stuff if I want it to hold still (dividers in lockers). If for no other reason that it is MUCH easier to remove than double stick tape, it is a top choice.

Re: Velcro vs Double Sided Tape - How do you mount things?

depends - do you want to be able to remove item or not.

If yes, like ceiling panels, then velcro.

If not, then like 3M VHB double sided tape.

Re: Velcro vs Double Sided Tape - How do you mount things?

Depends on what I am mounting....

When I use double stick I like the 3M grey outdoor rated tape that is sometimes labeled Automotive Trim Mounting Tape.
IT does not let go if you don't want it to let go (if you cleaned the surface properly)
Good stuff.
But you can slide a razor knife in, cut the foam then roll the tape off.

Velcro vs Double Sided Tape - How do you mount things?

This is the best stuff to use for mounting everything on a boat. We mount pictures, use it to hold down lights, computers, I use it to hold out TV moveable arm against the mount when in waves, it has a million uses and you can pull it off wood, fiberglass with no residue.

Available in 2 rolls, 10 feet long. Cut it with scissors to length you need and stick on anything you want to stay put.

Command Strips - holds, and is removable without scarring.

I drilled 3x 16 mm holes, them fit in 16mm wooden knobs already glued on frame.

Vynavil optional

No way they move

Better than screws

Re: Velcro vs Double Sided Tape - How do you mount things?

to stabilize pictures on the wall or to adhere light-weight objects to a shelf, I use a product called Museum Putty. It's like a craft clay consistency, but sticks to the woodwork, but is easily removable (and reusable) by just picking it off whatever it is on. It does not stain my woodwork, and leaves no sticky residue.
