Velcro to hold up ceiling panels

We are looking to do something different with our ceiling panels because it's a PIA to unscrew the little caps every time we need to get up above them. I've read about people using velcro. How well does this actually work? My wife is convinced that we will hit a big wave and our entire ceiling will come crashing down.

Re: Velcro to hold up ceiling panels

VELCRO Brand "Industrial Heavy Duty" tape, strips and coins have 50% more holding power than their standard strength hook and loop fasteners, and are able to hold up to 1lbs per square inch, up to 10lbs.

Their "ALFA-LOK" fasteners are the strongest VELCRO® Brand fasteners, and provide a high strength [holds 2 lbs per square inch up to 15 lbs.] , long term attachment, where the fastener is infrequently opened and closed.

The challenge is connecting the Velcro backing to the backing surfaces, Velcro itself is great in all kinds of " no visible fastener" situations

Re: Velcro to hold up ceiling panels

Velcro can work, for sure. My boat is 25 years old and there are access panels overhead that are still working with the original velcro.

If I was doing it from scratch, I would use 3M Dual-Lock, a Velcro-like product that is far stronger and longer lasting. It hold up lots of things on my boat, including some rather heavy stuff.

Re: Velcro to hold up ceiling panels

Velcro, yes. Keep your panel size/weight manageable and use heavy duty Velcro. You might want to add decorative teak strips for extra support. One caveat . . . Heavy weight Velcro is very tenacious so take your time removing panels for inspection underneath.
Good luck . . . Rognvald

Re: Velcro to hold up ceiling panels

I second SailingHarmonie's recommendation for 3M Dual Lock.

At work, we used Dual Lock to mount tablets on the walls outside our conference room. Great holding power.

If you don't know about 3M Dual Lock, you should.

Yes - good stuff!

3M “Dual Lock” is [sort of] like “Velcro”, but instead of hook & loop, both sides are the same, and are covered with mushroom topped stems, usually 240 per square inch.
When pushed together, the mushroom heads are forced past each other and they click [3M says ‘snap’], as they lock together.
The back has adhesive, and it mounts like Velcro.
3M claims that their ‘Dual Lock’ has 5 times the attachment strength, of a traditional 3M Hook and Loop [Velcro analogue].
It doesn't pick up lint, and hair, etc., like the hook side of regular Velcro does, and does not get raggedy looking, and fuzzy, like the loop side does. Evidently, it's used a lot on medical devices, and accessories; because it can be sterilized, and then dried, unlike Velcro.
It's pretty stiff to push together [or pull apart]; but it's either locked in, or it's not, no middle ground.
Dual lock’ is much more expensive than hook & loop.
