Using the boom to hoist item onto the boat

I thought I would ask for some input before a went ahead with a plan. I want to use the boom to help load heavier and cumbersome item onto the boat. They idea is to tighten the topping lifts and then detach the main sheet from the traveler. This being a pulley system I will then attach a net or strap whichever I need to attach to items and then use the main sheet to raise them up into the boat. I will also make a bridle to attach to the dinghy, 6 foot with a 5 HP outboard, and raise it at night. I believe the topping lift will take the stress, it is directly above the point I intend to pick items up with.

It is done all the time. I would back that topping lift up with a halyard, and put tag lines on the boom to control it's swing when the weight shifts inboard. Check all your fittings for safety first.

I agree. I always connect the halyard to the boom when not sailing and the control lines will keep the boom over the boat and not let it fly away. thanks

I've used this arrangement many times over the years to move my old 800 pound engine out of the engine compartment, so your dinghy should be no problem. As the other posts suggest, use the halyard to back up the topping lift, and use a couple of tag lines to control swing. I use my boom vang, which is a 6 part block and tackle, rather than the main sheet, to do the lifting, just because it is easier to remove and replace than disconnecting the main sheet.

We have a pair of carabiners on the main sheet so it can be quickly detached and reversed giving us I think 4:1 lift.
