Using adhesives instead of screws

On a steel project boat I have a lot of flooring and panelling to fix in place.

I am familiar with all the usual fixing techniques for steel but am wondering if the newer adhesives like VHB tape might be effective and easier/quicker or if the paint is likely to fail ?

Maybe even apply adhesives direct to unpainted steel - protect the steel and stick the panelling on.

Any experience of this ?
