Ultrasonic antifouling?? any good??
We saw some good results from a Ultrasonic Antifoul once in a marina. Can anybody give their experience of this piece of what sounds like ideal equipment. Does it interfere with any electronic equipment, and what happens if we forget and touch it, we would get a shock?? I would love to try it out (not touching it)

Fstbttms, this is what you always say when anyone asks about ultrasonic antifouling. Let's be honest: Cruisers Forum is great, but its search function is awful. You might get 1 reference out of 10 that has anything remotely related to the topic you are searching.

Right. That's why just now when I searched for "ultrasonic," I came up with 20 pages of posts using that word.

And then there's the expected replies by the expected people. One of these this topic will get responses by only those that have them on their boats instead of those just making "noise".

When using the search function, select "Posts" rather than "Threads." You will come up with more results than you care to read. And since the results are specific to the topic, you won't have to read entire threads, looking for the part of them that is pertinent.

I installed ultrasonic antifouling on my boat about three years ago. It had been copper-coated from new about seven years prior to this. I decided to try ultrasonics instead of re-coating with coppercoat, or indeed any other antifouling paint.
I get a coat of grassy slime fouling developing every year - it’s about 4mm thick, and comes off very easily. My saildrive, log (if left in) and depth transducer get thickly encased in all sorts of growth, which takes a lot of pressure washing to remove at the start of each season. What I don’t know though, is to what extent the old coppercoat is assisting.
I’m afraid this is not very conclusive and possibly doesn’t help you, but it’s the best I can offer, as an ultrasonic user, in response to your question
And no, you won’t get a shock from touching the transducers - they only emit various frequency ultrasonic pulses.

Re: Ultrasonic antifouling?? any good??
While you will not get a shock when touching..you might get some side effects that are not so desireable. Certain Ultrasounds are proven to have e detrimental effect on living organisms. Including us.
You might want to check with the manufacturer as to what frequencies and what power output they use and then google for effects.
Oh and whales and other cetaceans such as dolphins use ultrasounds for a variety of things.
I am interested myself to find an alternative to highly toxic antifouling paints.
Please let me know what you find out.

I'm not sure how you could get shocked by sound waves? As a DAG I don't know how I would like the vibrations in a laminated hull?

Re: Ultrasonic antifouling?? any good??
Had it for 4 years, works well at preventing barnacles on the hull except on the keel section. Does nothing for slime and growth. No shocks,, can hear it when diving under Boat. Important to have enough transmitters for the Boat size. We have 4 on a 48 footer. I would buy it again.

I installed the Jaycar kit on my aluminium cat 18 month ago. A waste of $2000. Useless!
