Re: To garboard or not to garboard

Do not, for any reason fit a 304 so called stainless steel fitting in your hull under water, high grade bronze or monel only.⚓️⛵️

You mentioned chipping ice from the bilge. Just pour a cup of your water system anti-freeze in the bilge when you haul out. I hope you find the leak before you have to do this! G'Luck!

Yeah - I was thinking the same thing, Searles.

I was wondering why the other poster had recommended it (and then was glad to see that they were out-of-stock and it was unknown when they would be available).

If it was me, I'd go for boatpoker's recommended bronze plug (Post #11).

Re: To garboard or not to garboard

I have a Columbia 9.6, so the back half of my keel is hollow glass and acts as a bilge. At the very bottom on the outside is a standard 1/2"bronze garboard plug. Lets out any water during the winter, so I haven't had any ice issues. Spring time, Teflon tape and a dab of 111 grease on the plug. Haven't had any issues. Planning to do something on the Hunter 37C this fall because last winter it was a pain, and I still haven't found all the leaks.
