The only boat in the marina with barnacles ...

... is mine! Any ideas on why this might be? I am in Nova Scotia, fibreglass monohull, newly painted hull in the spring using the same anti-fouling paint as the other boats, moored in the same mooring field. Every other boat hauls out with no barnacles and my hull, prop shaft and prop are covered. Underwater bronze fittings are also covered.

Prop is stainless. Boat has has Interlux barrier coat applied about 15 years ago and then two coats of red and two coats of black Micron CSC. When I start to see the red I recoat. Boat has been in fresh water until three years ago. First year here no problem. Last year and this its a forest of barnacles. Everyone here uses Interlux ACT which is what I put on last spring.

Any ideas?

Thanks

If that Micron CSC is ablative, you're not using the boat enough to slough off the barnacles when they are larva. Perhaps the CSC and the Interlux ACT are incompatible? Another issue is if the paint film isn't thick enough.

When you haul out, see if you can get a paint rep down to take a look. Often they can tell what went wrong.

It is true I did not use the boat as much as I would wish but other boats that went out less than I did do not have this problem. Same paint, same water, same or less use. Its a mystery.

Both the Micron and the ACT are ablative. I did notice that little or no paint came off when I brushed/washed down the hull at haul out. Either the ACT does not ablate (?) or it all ablated way too fast to make a difference in the water.

Ablative anti-foul is innefective for boats that rarely leave the slip.

Is it possible that you are in a quiet place on the field while your neighbours enjoy tidal or river flow of water?

I believe ACT is a hard ablative made for power boats.

I’ve been told that having too much zinc anodes will cause excessive barnacle growth.

Perhaps galvanic over protection? Can cause barnacle buildup. Any signs of bottom paint blistering? Are your anodes wearing away very slowly and or also covered in barnacles?

Would have to agree with the over zinc or the incorrect earthing of through hull metal underwater fittings ,also often a sign of an electrical leak on your boat . Just maybes. ⚓️
