Teak lumber

Anyone know where to purchase decent teak lumber at a non inflated price? I want to build new real cabin sole. I have searched the internet, but I don't trust site unseen boards. Anyone know a dealer with a reputation and real prices? Thanx Nelson S

I found Diamond Teak from Philadelphia on the internet to be excellent. I sent the a detailed cut list and it was delivered sanded all sides, labeled, wrapped and cut to 1/16" precision! And best of all it was very very reasonable.

I was at Brewers and they wanted 200 for one large board ! OUCH.

I use Homestead for all my hardwood projects (home and marine), they are 10 miles from the house. They have a very good supply of any hardwood or plywood you might need.

Good folks, no worries using them.

They have access to all sorts of woods I believe. Contact them and find out.

The poster asked about LUMBER not finished products like plywood and cup holders.

Diamond teak supplies teak lumber from Burma.

Thanks for the heads up. My idea was to apply 1/2 teak and holly or whatever to 1/4 inch marine ply and then cut it out into the shape of the old crappy veneered cabin sole. If anyone on here has tried this method, what epoxy did or would you use to bond the teak to the marine ply? West system epoxy?

teak sole

West sytem is good for this but the problem would be handling those pesky little strips of holly or maple. The way it's usually done is to try to choose stock with vertical grain, starting at 8/4 and dressed to finish at 1 7/8", which will be random widths but hopefully 6" and up. You then epoxy a piece of holly or maple to the top of that, the same width and length as your teak but resawn to 1/4" thick. Now you take that glued up piece and rip it to whatever thicknesses you want... 3/8" or less works well, because of weight, if the sub floor is adequate. (You could increase the plywood to suit, so you end up with the same overall thickness of floor). You end up with a piece of teak 1 7/8" and a piece of holly or birch 1/4" wide already glued to the edge of the teak, and they're at whatever thickness you set up. Plane one side, if necessary, and glue the sawn side down. Hope this helps. Bob S/V Restless

Jersey lumber is out. Prices are a lot better in Ohio even with the cost to ship. Thanx. May and Joli

Thanx Bob. Actually I'm off to Maine in the am to the Wilber Yacht boat facility where my brother has a one off custom boat in the works. I like your idea but I may as well see how they do it at the factory while I'm up there.

Enough teak to do a whole cabin floor is going to cost a fair chunk of change and I'd be leery of buying it sight unseen. If you are looking for LUMBER then one would assume you have the tools to work it, so you'll get the most for your money buying it rough - if the wood is clean and straight you can get two 1/2" thick pieces from 5/4 stock. The prices at the Jersey place are pretty good for rough lumber - a little cheaper than the cheapest place I've found on the west coast, and way better than Hawaii. I think the only place you might find it cheaper is on Ebay of Craigslist.

I bought teak sight unseen from Diamond Teak and the wood was "perfect". Was it all vertial grain? No. Did it have some color variation? Yes. it was straight sanded to 150 grit, no tear out, mill marks from planer knifes, labeled and carefully wrapped. It came delivered to my home and it was very inexpensive, half what I was quoted. It is dressed to 7/8" thick and if there was machining costs as there are from many lumber "stores", I was not charged or presented as separate item.

My project was able to use finished dressed lumber so a cut list was made and all I had to do was drill and screw the pieces together - I made grates for the cockpit seating. With every piece labelled it was like a simple assembly project. This was quite economical. I have some fitting to do, but the material costs were very reasonable.
