I’m loooking anyone who has knowledge regarding the design and/or repair of the 49 rudder system. My 1996 Taswell has developed a klonking sound at the rudder post at anchor and underway. I expect a bearing replacement is in my near future or possibly the fiberglass rudder is parting from the shaft.
Have you made sure that it is not the quadrant where it attaches to the rudder post ?
Have someone vigorously rotate the wheel back and forth and feel with your hand for any play at the top bearing at the packing. Also look for secure attachment of the quadrant to the rudder post, and the steeringcables into the quadrant.
Thanks for the reply Ericson38. Quadrant and shaft are tight. Hauled out last week and the bearing is sloppy. Now looking for any info on removing the bronze cap on my partial skeg so the rudder can be removed. I'm starting a new thread today. Thank again
