Tartan 4700 Hull/deck joint.

I recently looked at a Tartan 4700. For their hull to deck joints Tartan uses an aluminum plate that is bonded to both the hull and deck fiberglass flanges. They then bolt right trough the flanges and the aluminum plate.

The boat I looked at had the hull flange in parts separating away from the aluminum plate (only in areas without a bolt).

Apologies for the poor quality, but you can hopefully see what I mean in the middle of the attached picture.

Is this indicative of a serious issue? Is this common on Tartan hull/deck joints?

Thanks.

Do you know the age of the boat?

If you are settled on the Tartan line, there is a VERY active Tartan yahoo user group.

Almost all members are owners, or former owners, and very candid about addressing problems.

The 4700 was first built in 2011, so, not terribly old.

Re: Tartan 4700 Hull/deck joint.

Tartan has used the aluminum plate encapsulated in the hull flange since at least the T37 days in the mid 70s. Whether that has been problematic I don't know, but the owners forums should be able to help...

Am I right? This thread was stated by Surf Sail nearly a year ago? Maybe he has solved the problem?

Re: Tartan 4700 Hull/deck joint.

The hull/deck join is absolutely critical in heavy seas. Unless you are sure your craft is seaworthy do not tackle seas like this.
