Tabernacle bolt head stripped
On my Nimble Artic 26,
I used an electric impact screw driver on this bolt and now it has no slot.
In the past I have used a hammer and a chisel to remove these as well as easy outs. The tabernacle forms a box 5 inches wide around this teflon piece I am trying to replace.
How would you remove it?

Re: Tabernacle bolt head stripped
If you can't coax the thing out any other way, drill the head of, punch the remainder through and replace with bolts with allen key heads.

PB Blaster, then move in and out a tiny bit with vice grips,,,,repeat,,,repeat,,,repeat. Eventually it will start to move.
If nothing around it can be damaged by heat, hit it with propane torch after the first few attempts with the vice grips. Patience grasshopper

Re: Tabernacle bolt head stripped
I now slap myself before reaching for the impact driver.
So much less painful in the long run.
I'm a drill and stud extractor kinda.guy when possible/needed.

Re: Tabernacle bolt head stripped
One can try left-handed drills and extractors/easy outs. The go slow and be patience advice applies.
Replacement with matching flat (?) heads with an Allen socket and coat the threads with the correct anti-seize / Tefgel / Lanakote for the metals involved to prevent a future binding.
Do I understand from the pictures that the holes are 'blind', from the top, but not all the way through the deck?

Re: Tabernacle bolt head stripped
If it's not COMPLETELY rounded out, use a manual impact driver(the kind you hit with a hammer. Google it for images). It forces the bit into the screw while turning it slightly. I've had great luck with them when nothing else would work.
If it is rounded out, use a dremel tool with a cutting wheel (or a hacksaw blade if you can reach with it) to cut a slot in the head, then use the impact driver with a straight slot screwdriver bit.

Re: Tabernacle bolt head stripped
Since the item is a bolt it must have a nut attached at the other end otherwise it would be a partially or fully threaded machine machine screw. Just loosen the nut using whatever is appropriate ( which might involve an impact driver ) and then punch out the bolt from the nut end.
Good luck.

+1 for below. These work well.

I believe that's a #2 square drive, not a slotted or Phillips.
If it's an oval or has a chamfer, try the Square drive, or drill out just the head, no more, hopefully when you get the plate off you'll have a stud to visegrip out.

Re: Tabernacle bolt head stripped
I've had excellent results with "reverse twist" or left twist Cobalt drill bits, they usually stick and back out the stuck machine screw but if not they remove the head allowing removal of the tabernacle

Re: Tabernacle bolt head stripped
I've been a mechanic/machinist for 50 years as was my father before me. We've tried every type of easy out ever made and nothing compares to the new generation of screw extractors like GRABIT. There are other makes and I have no interest $ in any of them but can vouch for Grabit because I've used it with great success, other brands may be comparable. As always you should try to break the bond between the screw and it's captor by soaking with penetrant, or shock from a hammer, or heat, or all the above prior to attempting the extraction, but I'm tellin ya these things really work!

Re: Tabernacle bolt head stripped
Not as difficult as I thought. Thanks for all the suggestions.
After searching all my tool boxes fro the correct bit and a ratcheting handle.
I was able to take it out using the right sized bit in my stubby ratcheting screw handle.
The screw is only 3/8 inch long, the thickness of the tabernacle walls.
Thanks again
