Synthetic Teak Deck

Just wanted to blow the trumpet for some excellent work I had done in Tauranga, New Zealand by Marra Marine. Took my HR 36 to have the old teak removed and new synthetic teak installed on the decks, a huge and daunting job. A product called NuTeak was used, the job took 6 weeks, and the results are simply outstanding. 6 months on she still looks fantastic. I've a blog for this work and a video if anyone is interested to take a look, you can find it here:

Re: Synthetic Teak Deck

Dear Steve and Kaz, thank you for your post. I an considering installing synthetic teak on our aluminium hull cutter and it is great to know you are happy with Nuteak.

I would like to learn about how you are feeling about it as you are sailing at warm places, specially in terms of heat. Does it get hot? I remember when I had teak I used to throw buckets of salt water to cool it down around noon.

Any other insights you might share are also very welcome!

Yes, it gets a little hotter than the real teak under foot, not noticed any difference below deck.

Have had the odd bubble appear, it is glued down after all, but the advice was to slit with a Stanley knife and that solves it, all good so far.

You get the snail trails across it as lines rub on it, but they easily sand out. You can of course jet wash aggressively too.

Very happy with it, go for it!

Steve...

Synthetic teak in the tropics? Perhaps up North but 90-100 degree temps in bright sunlight would be an issue for many.

What's the issue 'for many' exactly?

Hi, S,
Natural teak has the ability to breathe and the ambient temperature is less than a synthetic material for deck surfaces. Temps here in South Florida/Tropics can be nothing short of brutal . . . We cannot walk barefoot on our glass decks in the Summer months or very hot days. However, if you wear deck shoes it may not matter.
