Stuck with 4200 - Leaking Like a Sieve

I have inherited two port lights that are leaking badly. They are the "Newfound Metals" type port, where the outer flange is seperate from housing. A ring..............

It appears that the ports have been installed with 4200.............and those bad boys are stuck on there good.

I need to remove that outer ring in order to inspect and caulk them properly.

Any ideas as to how to loosen the grip of 4200???

I was considering a bit of heat (carefully applied) vis a vis a torch.....????

Thaks in advance,

Steve and Jules

see if you can get some piano wire, guitar string, or seizing wire behind an edge then use the wire like a saw all the way around between cabin side and ring or get a hold of the mfg and find out if they have a solvent like the stuff for 5200. the wire works right now the solvent you have to wait for it to work.

Another Mike chimes in.

Sometimes slow and steady pressure works better than prying and sawing.

In the attached photo you can see how I’ve positioned a few bar clamps to apply pressure in the direction I want the Lewmar port to move.

Once you have the clamps in place slowly tighten them to increase the pressure. Wait a few minutes before tightening again. You can actually hear the caulk start to separate from the frame. Finally with the last tightening of the clamps the port pops free, undamaged and without pry marks.

The key is to take your time and not crank down on the clamps all at once. Tighten, and walk away for a few minutes.

I’ve used this technique on 4200, 101, Lifecaulk, silicone, and some other unidentified caulks.

Something to think about anyway.

Anti-Bond works on 4200 as well as 5200.

I've heard good things about Marine Formula 2000, a US product from Florida. Haven't used it myself but one of our shops up here sells it and a few people in our club have used it to good effect.

DeBond Corporation

Debond works well on 4200 and 5200, using a chemical reaction to penetrate and break the molecular bond.
