Stuck head discharge cap.

I've got two bronze head discharge caps on my boat. One opens fine and one is locked down tight and I need to get it open to get it pumped out. Don't think the previous owner ever used them to get the "stuff" off board. I have to as the discharge pump is not discharging and I've got to get the tank empty so I can fix it. Suggestions?

Maybe some P.B. Blaster, or some heat from a torch, or the small bottled torch for plumbers? Of course this is coming from a mufflerman, so much better ideas may come through?........lol

First try the everyday procedure of soaking it with penetrating oil and tapping it with a hammer to try to break up whatever it is that is holding the threads. If it is the type that uses a standard key to open, the holes of the key are generally too close together in the center of the cap to transmit much torque, but if you drilled an indent (just a partial hole and not through into the threads) closer to the outside edge of the cap, and used a punch, you could use a hammer on the punch in the indent, to drive the cap in the counterclockwise (unscrewing) direction, and it should loosen up.

So far P.B. Blaster is the best penetrating oil I have used. If there's something better I would love to know. Everyday I take apart rusted parts............

Re: Stuck head discharge cap.

I've read that a 50/50 mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid works well. Easy and cheap to try. I've tried it but not enough to say for sure.
