Sound Deadening

good day everyone
was pondering the idea of adding some sound deadoning to the inside of my engine compartment. the little 1gm10 is a great engine but does tend to make a bit of noise. thought if i were to add some type of glue on styrofoam or something to the entire inside structure of the engine compartment that would help reduce the running noise. any thoughts concerns about doing such a task. is there a preferred type of insulation that i should look at using. thanks

There is special sound deadening material made. It works a lot better than just foam.. Check with amarine supply place..

I just purchased some sound proofing froman outfit in Florida, but don't remember the name but if you google sound proofing you will get plenty to read with names of places to buy it. It comes in different thicknesses and weights. I would recomend not using foam as it is not fire proof. Most sound proofing is fire proff or retardant.

another option is this special coating.... you just paint it on. These people used to try to sell me their products. Their hi temp stuff works great! Never used their sound deadening paint though.... http://www.hytechsales.com/prodsc.html

I see this in professional installations all the time. It's expensive but works very well.

Depends on how much you want to spend. The engine room on my trawler has about 500 sq ft of ceiling and outside walls so I'm going with two layers of 1.5 inch foil backed foam covered with 1/2 inch plywood, total cost of materials of about $1 / ft. It's not fireproof, but than neither is the 3000 gls of fuel. Other than the air vents, there's only one hatch so I'm going to rely on an inert gas fire suppression system with backup extinguishers. My engine is a 8/71 Detroit Diesel that screams and it works pretty good.
